Recently in photography, we were able to learn about macro photography and images. What’s wonderful about Southeast Tech, is that they have a photography studio and equipment that a student like me couldn’t afford right away. I’ve been using a lens in class that allows me to get really close to my subject on a 1:1 ratio scale. In class, my professor Rick was demonstrating it by taking photos of a penny. First, we used a standard lens and attempted to get a close up image. Unfortuntely, if you just use the zoom function, the image will become distorted and cease to be useable. That’s why macro photography is so important.
I recently got a collection of filters and lens for my camera which included some “macro” lens that could be attached. Granted, this is definitely not the same magnification like the lens I used in class. But for me, it works at the level I am at and I can still improve on my skills by using the equipment from school.
The hardest part that is also the most fun about macro photography is getting the focus just right. What’s neat is that I as the photographer have free reign on what I want the audience to focus on. Is it the water droplets on a petal? The words on a rusted piece of metal? The decision lies in my hand and I can affect the way the image is presented.
