One of the many ways I look for inspiration is by looking at other artists and designers. One such designer I adore is Karen Hallion. You might have heard of her from previous posts. I had the opportunity to attend NerdCon where she was attending and I even took a workshop which she lead. During it she went through her creative process. But you can read about that in my NerdCon posts.
Karen Hallion attended Ringling School of Art and Design and graduated with a BFA in Illustration. After her graduation she tried to do some freelancing. However it wasn’t working out the way the she thought it would. She then had the opportunity to teach art at an elementary for several years. Because of different circumstances at the school, she had to stop working as the art teacher. I remember the way she described this during her workshop. She said there was this fear. Once you’ve started something and worked at it for so long, change can be scary. I can understand that in the way I graduated from Concordia College with a BA in Theatre Arts. Then I had no idea what I wanted to do and I wasn’t even sure I wanted to do theatre any more. But then I found Southeast Tech and went back to school. I feel like I’m starting a new and exciting chapter in my life. Much in the same way that Karen Hallion started anew in freelancing. Now she has a successful Etsy store, sells her artwork on tshirts through various sites, and has even designed the artwork for an upcoming game, called Wizard School.
Hallion has a unique style where she matches different characters from movies and shows and combines them. She draws what she enjoys and it then brings joy to other. My favorite series of hers is “New Adventures in Time and Space” which takes the TARDIS from Doctor Who and places it in front of Disney princesses. It’s wonderful work and I admire her greatly.
All artwork belongs to Karen Hallion. You can visit her etsy store at: https://www.etsy.com/shop/khallion?section_id=19032194
